THE STUDIOS @ 255 MAIN STREET

In creating a series of affordable studios for 255 Main Street, an efficient yet local approach became the conceptual driving force in molding the architecture of the units and spaces. The care and attention to each aspect of living opportunistically brings to fruition the ability to house those in need, in a way that is both uplifting and crafted. The Studios at Half Moon Bay allows for long term dwelling grounded in container based construction, and while optimizing site density, allows each one bedroom 320 square foot studio to feel valuable and important. Not designed merely to house, but to remind the occupants and the community at large that small spaces belong to our neighborhoods and when done with care can become an inspiring example of efficient living and tying ones history to a thread that leads to the future.  Each variation is developed to be integrated into a site with 14 total units, and all focused around a centralized outdoor space that can supplement, bind, and enhance this specialized communal environment. The initial ideas represented below illustrate diverse responses to the idea of a more modern studio and what BREAKWATER, BEACHCOMBER, and MAVS each offer Half Moon Bay in rethinking the present and future of affordable housing and care.
